Have you ever heard about the Skipjack tuna?

Skipjack tuna, also known as Katsuwonus pelamis, is a species of tuna found in tropical waters around the world. This fish is a popular choice for commercial fishing and is also highly sought after by recreational fishermen.

Skipjack tuna is a small tuna species, typically weighing between 2 to 6 kilograms (5 to 13 pounds). It is a fast-growing fish, reaching maturity at just two years old, and has a short lifespan of around 5 to 6 years. This makes it an attractive target for commercial fishing, as it can be caught and processed quickly.

One of the most important factors that make skipjack tuna popular for commercial fishing is its high reproductive rate. This species spawns throughout the year, which means that it can quickly replenish its population even after being heavily fished. However, overfishing and poor management of skipjack tuna populations can still lead to significant declines in their numbers.

Skipjack tuna is a popular food fish, with a mild flavor and firm, meaty texture. It is often used in canned tuna, sashimi, and sushi, and is also used as bait for sportfishing. This fish is also an important source of protein for many coastal communities around the world, making it a vital food resource.

To ensure the sustainability of skipjack tuna populations, many countries have established quotas and other management measures to regulate commercial fishing. These measures aim to ensure that skipjack tuna is caught at a sustainable level and that the species can continue to thrive in its natural habitat.

In conclusion, skipjack tuna is an important fish species that is highly valued for its commercial and recreational uses. However, it is essential to manage skipjack tuna populations sustainably to prevent overfishing and ensure that this species can continue to provide food and other benefits for generations to come. By working together to manage skipjack tuna populations effectively, we can help to ensure that this important species remains a vital part of our oceans and our world.

Agritech Solutions at the V National Tuna Congress

On November 24, 2022, Agritech Solutions was present at the V National Tuna Congress, organized by the Spanish tuna fleet, grouped in the Organization of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (OPAGAC), at the Casa de América (Palacio de Linares) of Madrid.

Since the previous edition of this biennial event, held in 2018, the fleet has set milestones, of relevance for the world fishing sector, in the certification of the integral sustainability of its activity, based on its conviction to safeguard the ecosystem and resources fishing vessels to continue favoring their sustainability and the socioeconomic growth of the riparian countries.

During the conference, presentations were held by renowned national and international experts on the environmental, socioeconomic, commercial, regulatory, technological, nutritional and consumer criteria that currently define the global tropical tuna fishery and distinguish the Spanish fleet in a market globalized.

Three presentations took place that addressed each of the aspects of this integral sustainability: environmental, social and economic; all of them materialized in the two labels obtained by the Spanish fleet in an internationally pioneering way.

Regarding economic sustainability, a traditional claim of the tuna fleet was analyzed: the revision of the EU criteria for imports of fishery products from fleets that do not meet the quality standards of community fisheries. A case of unfair competition aggravated in the case of tuna, one of the fish most consumed by Europeans, due to being exempt from tariffs, through what are known as tariff quotas.

Skipjack tuna, AGRITECH SOLUTIONS new product

New Agritech Solutions Skipjack tuna catalogue:

In a few days, you will have available on our website the new Agritech Solutions Skipjack tuna catalogue.

In this new catalogue, you will be able to find information about one of the new products that AGRITECH SOLUTIONS is working on; skipjack tuna:

Skipjack tuna is the most common and most fished large-bodied species of tuna. For management purposes, it is often grouped with yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, and other “trua tunas” (genus Thunnus), but differences in their anatomy and physiology have led scientists to place skipjack in its own right. genus (Katsuwonus).

A primary difference between the Skipjack and true tunas is the Skipjack’s lack of specialized structures to raise its body temperature above that of its surroundings.

True tunas (and some other fish) can partially control their body temperature (ie they are warm-blooded), but skipjack’s body temperature is purely a function of the surrounding water (ie they are cold-blooded).

From AGRITECH SOLUTIONS we want to transform the sector and we propose a 100% social, environmental and economic sustainable fishing model, based on supporting artisanal fishing and on the recovery of fishing resources.

In order to achieve this, AGRITECH SOLUTIONS works on:

  • Support for artisanal and sustainable fishing.
  • Progressive elimination of destructive fishing gear.
  • Advance and conversion of deep-sea fishing towards sustainability.
  • Limitation of aquaculture exploitations.
  • Measures aimed at consumer information and awareness.
  • Pollution control in the marine environment.

This model would guarantee us a future with well-preserved oceans, more protected areas and recovered fish stocks.

As we have previously commented, this is a brief summary of what you can find in the new tuna catalogue. If you want more information, do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to assist you and solve all the doubts you may have.
